Although the Cannabis Act legalized recreational marijuana usage for adults in Canada last month, the medical side of the industry has also seen a growth spurt and a corresponding glut of supply as demand spikes.
New clinics are popping up frequently in the wake of legalization, with the latest set to arrive from Ontario-based organization Avail Cannabis.
The company announced the signing of a letter of intent to open two new Barrie walk-in clinics in conjunction with Express Aid Pharmacy.
Express Aid pharmacist Andrew Schonbe commented on the upcoming collaboration in a press release this morning:
“We are very proud to collaborate with an experienced leader in cannabis promotion and education. As a local leader in health and wellness, it is important for us to support medical alternatives within the community. We look forward to this new initiative that will provide much needed walk-in clinic services by our pharmacy site.”
In addition to the upcoming two new clinics, the company announced plans to rebrand an existing Tweed Main Street Barrie location under the Avail banner. The redesign and brand name change are slated to be finished by Dec. 1, 2018.
Furthermore, Avail has inked a medical clinic franchise agreement for the opening of a new location in North York. Franchise location owner Gopi Mahen commented on the agreement:
“We are excited to begin this new venture. Our collaborative effort to create a welcoming environment, raise awareness and streamline accessibility through Avail’s medical channels and industry experience will be a benefit for all in the GTA.”
Avail’s new ventures may be on the local side, but larger producers have also inked a slew of supply deals in recent weeks.
Namaste subsidiary Cannmart signing a supply agreement with Rocky Mountain Marijuana Inc. Canadian pharmacy giant Shoppers Drug Mart also managed to gain approval from Health Canada to provide medical marijuana at the end of September.
Gains in the medical industry haven’t been limited to Canada either, with two new states approving legalization in Tuesday’s US elections.
Medical legalization in Utah and Missouri now bring the total number of US states to approve medical cannabis up to 32, leading to speculation of impending action on federal recreational legalization.
